With what seems like every runner I pass nowadays plugged into some sort of musical device, blasting high beats per a minute tracks to power their training, it got me thinking about why I don’t listen to music whist I run.
Maybe it’s because I started running so long ago, that to carry any sort of portable music device around with me would have significantly slowed me down! Plus having to stop to flip over my C60 cassette to side B, would have ruined my mile split times.
But even now with the smallest iPod, I still can’t listen to music whilst I exercise, I feel I lose one of my senses, and thus feel like I perform less effectively… which there is zero evidence for, but I think I’m happy that way now.
So, what if I was to listen to music whilst I ran, what would that sound like? So, I’ve pondered a little, and here are some thoughts on the sound track that I don’t run too…
I think I’d start off strong, with ‘Public Enemy – Harder than you think’ because we all know that getting out of the door is the hardest part of any training session after a long day.
That’s a pretty epic start, I’d then keep the beat going by slipping into a bit of ‘Leftfield – Phat planet’. That beat would have me at sub 5 minute mile pace for sure… but what’s going to keep that going?
A quick blast from ‘Blur – Song 2‘ and this threshold run has been kicked up a notch or two! Next in to ‘Underworld -Born slippy’ and I’d be banging out those miles!
S0 now, a good few miles in to this run, I just need to settle into a rhythm. And on comes this, ‘MIA – Paper planes’. And then BOOM! ‘REM – Orange Crush’ quickly followed by ‘Foster the people – Pumped up kicks’ and we’re coasting through those miles now, that’s how it works, isn’t it? 😉
OK, we’re nearly done and feeling a little positive about this run, so what better than ‘INXS – Kick’ to remind you, you’ve still got work to do!
With only a mile or so to go now, I’d slip on a bit of ‘Daft Punk – One more time’, the hard work is done, the last mile is taking care of itself and I’m finishing strong, almost job done!
And for that cheesy end to this playlist and run, (as well as hopefully being mood reflective for my warm down), I’d finish with ‘Pharrell Williams – Happy’ – It’s an obvious choice, but hey I’m done and I’m feeling good!
So there you have it, the playlist that will never be my workout play list. And with so much music around there’s certainly a different beat for different feet, so what would yours sound like?
